We recall the special art curator, Furry Yoon Sang, and his 57 artist friends, the muses. Through this, we want to relive the artistic romance of 1956, a difficult but warm time. What is the keyword for this work? It is ‘restoration.’ Restoration that summons the past and evokes analog sensibility. Then, what is the solution as a media work? Ironically, it is AI, which is emerging as the latest technology.
Based on AI, we guess Furry Yoon Sang’s appearance, including his facial features, height, and appearance, and his voice. We imagine Furry Yoon Sang as a tough guy + dandy + romantic, like a manly man in an old black-and-white noir film, and also like a lover in a romance film. We want to see and feel the unknown ‘person’ Yun Sang, including his various expressions, joys and sorrows, and even the way he smoked his favorite pipe. He planned the exhibition in 1956 and passed away four years later at the young age of 41. As I was finishing up the work, I wanted to honor Yoon Sang, who will be remembered as romantic with his eternal youth, with the final ending. Like a scene from a youth movie, looking at the woman he loves with a fresh smile, a scene that stops forever…
How can we bring about the meeting of the old and the new, the intersection of art and technology through media? How far can we unravel it with current technology? I try to pull the future in order to summon the past. I hope that this work will form a little bit of ‘empathy connecting the past and the present’ and furthermore, I hope that it will be in line with the purpose of this exhibition, which is to “reconsider the meaning and value of humanism in the AI era through art.”
특별했던 예술 기획자 털보 윤상, 그리고 그의 예술가 친구 57인의 뮤-즈들을 추억한다. 이를 통해서 어려운 시절이었지만 따뜻했던 1956년 당시의 예술적 낭만을 복기하고자 한다. 이 작업의 키워드는 무엇일까? 그것은 바로 ‘복원’이다. 과거를 소환하고 아날로그 감성을 환기시키는 복원. 그렇다면 미디어 작업으로써 그 해법은 무엇일까? 아이러니하게도 최신 기술로 떠오르고 있는 AI이다.
AI를 토대로 털보 윤상의 이목구비, 키, 풍채를 비롯한 외모와 목소리를 추측해 본다. 예전 흑백 느와르 영화의 상남자처럼, 한편 로맨스 영화의 사랑꾼과도 같은 터프가이+멋쟁이+낭만쟁이 털보 윤상을 상상해 본다. 그의 다양한 표정들과 희노애락, 애용하던 파이프 담배를 문 모습까지, 미지의 ‘사람’ 윤상을 보고 싶고 또한 느끼고 싶다. 그는 1956년에 전시를 기획하고는 4년 후 41세의 이른 나이에 세상을 떠났다. 작업을 마무리하는 즈음 마지막 엔딩은 영원한 젊음으로 낭만으로 기억될 윤상을 기리고 싶었다. 청춘 영화의 한 장면처럼 풋풋한 미소를 띠우며 사랑하는 여인을 바라보듯, 영원히 정지되는 그런 장면으로…
어떻게 하면 신구의 만남을, 예술과 기술의 접점을 미디어로 이끌어 낼까? 현재의 기술력으로 어느 정도까지 풀어 낼 수 있을까? 과거를 소환하기 위해 미래를 견인해 본다. 바라건대, 이번 작업이 조금이나마 ‘과거와 현대를 잇는 공감’을 형성하고, 나아가 “예술을 통한 AI시대 휴머니즘의 의미와 가치 재고”라는 이번 전시의 취지에 부합하길 바란다.
