Born in Seoul, S.Korea, Shon Kim originally majored in Law and received Bachelor of Arts in Law. He studied Painting & Drawing at School of the Art Institute of Chicago and explored Experimental Animation at CalArts, under his two mentors, the late Jules Engel, the master of Experimental Animation, and professor Myron Emery. Kim received an MFA degree of Experimental Animation at CalArts in 2004 and evidently, ‘Experimental Animation’ became his life’s priority and pursuit.

Shon Kim's works have been internationally presented at the museums, the galleries and festivals; MoMA(2006), REDCAT(2006), The Hammer Museum(2007), Modern and Contemporary Art Centre in Hungary(2008), Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Chile(2007), IFC Center in NYC(2007), The Orange County Contemporary Art Center(2005), Torrance Art Museum(2016), Seoul Museum of Art(2011), Daegu Art Museum(2012), Arko Art Center(2011), Art Center Nabi(2007), Coreana Museum of Art(2009), OCI Museum(2013), VIDEOFORMES(2009), FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DU FILM SUR L'ART(2007), Slamdance Film Festival(2007), International Film Festival ART FILM(2006), ANIMA MUNDI(2006/2009), Odense Film Festival(2006), Avanto Festival(2005), etc. And they are awarded at International Video art Festival Madrid(2013, 2nd Prize), The First and the Last Intl' Experimental Film Festival(2009, Special flEXiff Award), Asolo Art Film Festival(2009, The Best Video Art & Computer Art Film), New Jersey International Film Festival(2006, Best Experimental Film & Video), San Diego Asian Film Festival(2006, Best Experimental Film), World-wide HIV/AIDS Art Competition(2005, 1st Prize), Experimental Film & Video Festival In Seoul(2005, Fuji Film Eterna Award), and Internationales filmfest Braunschweig(2006, the Leo Award, Special Mention), etc.

After CalArts years, getting Extra-ordinary Visa(O-1 Visa) three times, Shon Kim has worked as a professional fine artist at ABRI INC., ILLUMINATED METROPOLIS INC., French Bulldog Productions LLC. in New York and the Downtown Art Center Gallery in LA since 2006 and have served as a programmer at Slamdance Film Festival since 2007. He has been working on Experimental Animation, Drawing project <untamed Line>, Media installation, Performance, and Interdisciplinary art cooperating with various artists in different fields. For past 20 years, he never stopped his personal work.

Shon Kim has taught at many universities since 2011; Korea National University of Arts, Konkuk University, Choogye University for the Arts, Kynghee University, Kyugil University and Hanyang Women's University. Classes I taught are <Experimental Animation>, <Character Design>, <Media Art>, <Digital Editing>, and <Thesis Seminar>, etc.

Shon Kim is currently preparing for a Ph.D. thesis in Animation theory program at Chung-Ang University to keep pace with his production. The subject of thesis is 'Progressive Animation'. Since technical storming in animation, lots of things have been changed. However, he will keep holding Experimental spirit.
